Let’s face it, maintaining indoor or outdoor plants can get tough. Some of us don’t really have the time it takes to truly care for our plants while others might think it’s just plain difficult. The best way to remedy both situations is to get plants that are easily maintained and we have compiled a list for you below.
Shiny Leaf Plants are the easiest plants to maintain:
- Easy watering – Leaves can get wet and absorb water. Water from the bottom or top of the plant.
- Cleaning the leaves – Wipe the leaves off with a damp cloth. Easy to clean off dust.
- Does not like direct sunlight. Sunlight can burn the leaves leaving a yellow spotted appearance.
- Easy to propagate – To make propagate place cuttings in a glass of water.
Fuzzy Leaf Plants:
- Water from the bottom up or under leaf watering being careful not to create a soggy area near the leaf stem meets the water. Do not spill water on fuzzy-hairy leaves as some plants will begin to die from over-watering or water puddling around the fuzzy leaves. Plants of this type are best watered from the bottom up. Never water from the top down, or run water over the plant while under a faucet of water.
- Cleaning the leaves – Best cleaned us you use a soft makeup brush or soft paint brush and just brush the dust particles off the leaves.
- No direct sunlight. Direct sun and heat will burn the plant.
- Can propagate cuttings, but best to use root growth formula to propagate.
Shiny Leaf Plants include:
Nephrolepis Exaltata – Also known as a fern plant. Loves to receive a fine mist of water, filtered sun, and live in warm conditions.
Chinese Evergreens – Green shiny leaves, easiest plants to grow and are multi-colored leaves of variegated greens. Low maintenance plants and enhance any décor.
Spider Plant – Thin-leafed groups of green leaves from which new sprouts grow and hang from the mother plant. Easy to grow and multiplies rapidly. Generally a hanging plant.
Syngonium Podophyllum – Shiny green leafed plant, rapidly growing, becomes bushy.
Devil’s Ivy – Great hanging plant once it gets started, shiny-leafed, and great for making cuttings and rooting to propagate plant size quickly.
Philodendron – Another great indoor plant that will grow and grow to fill any space you allow it to take over. There are two varieties of philodendron – big leafed and small leafed.
Fuzzy/Waxy Leafed Plants include: These plants are also considered low maintenance plants.
African Violets – Great plants, beautiful to look at and will surprise you with a splash of violets. Never water from the top and remember, this plant doesn’t like to move around. Find a nice spot for this plant where it receives filtered light, but not direct light and let it live happily ever after.
Purple Wandering Jew – Another beautiful plant that is one of the easiest plants to maintain but has a rather fuzzy leaf or stem, but can be propagated in water. Makes a great hanging plant.
